We match the build to the room and the budget. For general shelving and storage we often use melamine or laminate over a quality board for a hard-wearing, cost-effective result, while feature pieces can be finished in timber veneer or 2-pac (polyurethane) for a premium look. Anything near a kitchen, laundry or wet area is carcassed in HMR moisture-resistant board, which handles damp better than standard particleboard, though it is not waterproof. Soft-close hinges and runners are standard, the kind you will recognise from brands such as Blum or Hettich. Why flat-pack cannot do bespoke

Flat-pack ranges are built around standard cabinet sizes, and the nearest warehouse is a trip over the Queensland border near the Gold Coast. That works for a plain cupboard, but joinery is by definition the stuff standard modules do not cover: the sloping under-stair void, the odd alcove, the window seat that has to match a bay.
