Most Tweed kitchens fall into a handful of shapes, and the right one depends on your walls and how the room opens to the rest of the house. A galley layout suits the narrow floor plans in older Tweed Heads and Tweed Heads South cottages, running two facing runs of bench with a clear walkway between. An L-shaped kitchen wraps two adjoining walls and leaves room for a small table, which works well in the brick-veneer homes around Banora Point. A U-shaped kitchen uses three walls for maximum bench and storage, ideal for a busy family in Terranora or Bilambil Heights. The Tweed sits in a humid subtropical zone, and the coastal weather station at Coolangatta records in the order of 1,200mm of rain a year, climbing well past 1,500mm in the hinterland around Murwillumbah under Wollumbin. February is both the wettest and the most humid month, with relative humidity around the high seventies. That moisture, plus the salt carried in off the beaches and the Tweed River, is the reason we build kitchens the way we do. Carcasses are cut from 16 to 18mm high-moisture-resistant (HMR) board, the edges sealed with heat-applied edge tape so water cannot creep into the core, and every sink and cooktop cut-out is sealed rather than left raw. We are honest about this: HMR board is moisture-resistant, not waterproof, so the sealing detail and the hardware matter. For homes close to the surf we specify corrosion-resistant hinges, runners and fixings. Boxes are glued and dowelled and packed level on install, with door reveals held to within about 2mm. Drawers run on full-extension runners rated to roughly 40kg, stepping up to 70kg for heavy pot drawers, and soft-close hinges from Blum or Hettich are rated well beyond 100,000 open-and-close cycles. Doors are finished in melamine, high-pressure laminate, timber veneer or a two-pack polyurethane top coat; we are cautious with vinyl-wrap near ovens and cooktops, where heat can lift the film over time. Drawer boxes are metal-sided or timber, with the option of a handleless J-pull or push-to-open profile for a clean coastal look, and internal cutlery and utensil inserts are sized to your drawers rather than trimmed-down generic trays. Every hinge is three-way adjustable, so doors can be re-set dead flush months later once the house has settled through a wet summer.

Custom cabinetry versus a flat-pack run to Logan

There is no IKEA in the Tweed or on the Gold Coast, so a flat-pack kitchen means a round trip of roughly 90 to 100 kilometres north up the M1 across the Queensland border to IKEA Logan at Slacks Creek, then self-managing the build. We talk through how you use the room, the look you want and a realistic budget, so the design that follows suits your actual walls and services rather than a catalogue.

Design and written quote

Next we turn the measure into a clear design and a written, itemised quote. Materials, door styles, compliant benchtops, hardware and a realistic timeline are all set out plainly, with honest advice on trade-offs, such as laminate versus natural stone, or where two-pac is worth it. Because engineered stone is banned, you will only ever see legal, safe benchtop options. Nothing is ordered or built until you are happy and the quote is signed off.

Build, install and warranty

In the workshop your cabinets are glued, dowelled and built square, then delivered and installed by the same team that measured them. On site we scribe to the walls and pack everything dead level, holding reveals to within about 2mm and adjusting the three-way hinges so every door aligns. How long does a custom kitchen take from start to finish?

Allow roughly six to ten weeks. After the on-site measure and design sign-off, cabinetry is built in the workshop over about three to five weeks, then installed on site across three to five days. A natural stone or porcelain benchtop adds time because it is templated after the cabinets are fitted and fabricated by a licensed stonemason before final install.

Do you remove and dispose of the old kitchen?

Yes. We strip out the existing kitchen and take the old cabinetry away, and we coordinate the timing with your plumber, electrician and tiler so the trades come in the right order. If you would rather use your own trades we work in with them, and we make sure the services rough-in lines up with the new cabinetry before anything is fixed.

Why don't you offer engineered stone benchtops?

Because it is illegal. The use, supply and manufacture of engineered or reconstituted stone was banned across Australia from 1 July 2024, and importation from 1 January 2025, due to the silicosis risk to workers who cut it. We fit only compliant benchtops: laminate, natural granite or marble, porcelain or sintered stone, solid timber and stainless steel.

Can you build a kitchen suited to a beachfront or salt-air home?

Yes, and it is much of what we do. For homes near the beaches and the Tweed River we specify corrosion-resistant hinges, runners and fixings, seal every cut-out, and build carcasses from moisture-resistant HMR board. We are upfront that HMR is moisture-resistant rather than waterproof, so the sealing detail and the right coastal hardware do the real work.
